3. Soil Management
Good long-term management of land and soil is critical for maintaining production. This section of the "Sustainable Agriculture Code" is concerned with the
conservation of high quality soil and minimising soil loss and degradation.
A healthy, fertile soil is important for producing a high yield and quality pasture or crops with minimal inputs. Good soil management is also important for protection of watercourses and for biodiversity. The main principles and practices behind sustainable soil management are covered in the main SAC Implementation Guidance, which also applies to pasture management. Please refer to specific dairy guidance for soil management under pasture, which looks at animal-specific aspects such as livestock-related compaction and contamination by veterinary medicines.
